Technical Glossary

ISO VG 220

International Standard viscosity grade indicating oil thickness at 40°C. VG 220 = 220 centiStokes (cSt). At -10°C, this can increase to 800-1200 cSt, making equipment nearly impossible to start without pre-heating.

Boundary Lubrication

Critical lubrication regime during startup where metal surfaces are separated by only a molecular-thin lubricant film. At cold temperatures, this film breaks down faster, leading to metal-on-metal contact and accelerated wear.

NLGI Grade 2

National Lubricating Grease Institute consistency classification. Grade 2 (semi-solid) is most common but can solidify below -15°C. Grade 1 (softer) or synthetic alternatives maintain pumpability in cold conditions.

Pour Point

Lowest temperature at which lubricant maintains flow. Mineral oils: typically -9°C to -15°C. Synthetic PAO: down to -54°C. Below pour point, oil solidifies and ceases to provide protection.

EPDM Compound

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer rubber. Maintains elasticity from -40°C to +150°C, unlike standard nitrile which embrittles below -20°C. Essential for seals, gaskets, and belts in cold environments.

Phase Change (Wax Formation)

When mineral oils cool below ~2°C, paraffin wax crystals precipitate out, forming a gel-like structure that multiplies viscosity 3-5x. Synthetic oils eliminate this failure mode entirely.

Cold Cranking Simulator (CCS)

ASTM D5293 test measuring viscosity at low temperatures under shear. Predicts actual startup torque requirements. Target: <3500 cP for reliable cold starts below 0°C.

Thermal Shock

Rapid temperature cycling causing condensation inside equipment housings. Water contamination then freezes, blocking oil passages and accelerating corrosion. Prevented by breather desiccants and thermal insulation.
