Daily Machinery Inspection
A structured daily walk-around is the single most cost-effective maintenance activity in any facility. Most catastrophic failures give early warning signs — the goal is to catch them before they escalate.
- Listen for unusual noises: grinding, squealing or knocking from bearings, gearboxes or motors.
- Look for visible cracks, corrosion, loose fasteners or misaligned guards.
- Check for oil or grease leaks around seals and housings.
- Inspect belt drives for fraying, cracking or visible glazing on the belt surface.
Pro tip: Log every inspection result — even "all clear" — in a digital maintenance register. Trend data reveals slow deterioration that a single inspection misses.
The right grease, the right amount, at the right time
Bearing Lubrication Schedules
Over 36% of premature bearing failures are attributed to incorrect lubrication — either too much, too little, the wrong type, or contaminated grease. A disciplined lubrication schedule is non-negotiable.
- Match grease NLGI grade to speed and load: NLGI 2 is standard for most industrial bearings; NLGI 1 for high-speed or low-temperature applications.
- Ensure grease base oil viscosity is appropriate for the bearing's operating temperature range.
- Never mix greases with different thickener types (lithium vs. calcium complex) — this can cause rapid degradation.
- For food processing environments, use NSF H1 approved grease on any bearing near product contact.
Important: Over-greasing is as damaging as under-greasing. Excess grease raises bearing temperature, accelerates seal wear and attracts contaminants. Always use a measured quantity.

Storage Tips for Industrial Belts
Improper storage is one of the most overlooked causes of premature belt failure. A belt that has been stored incorrectly for six months can fail within weeks of installation, even if it is a premium product.
- Store belts in a cool, dry environment: ideal temperature range is 15–25°C with relative humidity below 65%.
- Avoid proximity to heat sources, direct sunlight or UV fluorescent lighting — ozone and UV cause rubber cracking and hardening.
- Keep belts away from electric motors, transformers or welding equipment — ozone generated by electrical equipment degrades rubber rapidly.
- Avoid storage near solvents, oils, acids or other chemicals that can attack the belt compound.
Pro tip: Always purchase belts from authorised distributors with traceable stock. Grey-market belts may have unknown storage histories and compromised performance from day one.
